What is an AI website builder?

Everything is called an 'AI builder' these days. This is what the term really means — and the difference between a smart template and a system that keeps working.

Definitie

AI website builder

An AI website builder is software that generates a complete website from a plain-language description: structure, copy and design. Instead of building pages yourself, you describe your business and review the result.

Three generations of AI builders

Generation 1 — smart templates. The AI picks a template and fills in your business name. Fast, but the result is a filled-in template; everything after that is manual work.

Generation 2 — generative builders. The AI genuinely generates: unique copy, a fitting structure, its own style. This is where most serious AI builders stand in 2026. The limitation: after publishing, the AI stops and your maintenance begins.

Generation 3 — self-improving systems. The AI stays involved after launch: it measures how visitors use the site and proposes improvements that you approve. The site is no longer a finished product but an ongoing system.

What should you look for?

Four questions that separate the wheat from the chaff: (1) Does the AI generate real copy or fill in a template? (2) What happens after publishing — is there an improvement loop? (3) Is the SEO foundation (meta tags, structured data, sitemap) handled automatically? (4) Do you stay in control — is nothing published without your approval?
