MCP (Model Context Protocol)
MCP is an open standard (introduced by Anthropic in 2024) that describes how AI models safely connect to external tools, systems and data sources. Just as USB is one standard for peripherals, MCP is one standard for AI connections: an AI that speaks MCP can work with any system that offers MCP — your CMS, your calendar, your analytics.
Why does MCP exist?
Before MCP, every AI integration needed custom work: one connector for this CMS, another for that accounting package. MCP standardises it. A system offers its capabilities ('tools') once via MCP, and any AI model that speaks the protocol can work with it directly — safely, with clear boundaries on what is and isn't allowed.
What does it mean for a business owner?
